Why You Clean Makeup Brushes & Sponges

We get it! Cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges can seem like a real time suck. But here’s truth. The bacteria, dirt and oil living in these products can cause break outs, skin irritation and even eye infections. Pretty gross, right? So do yourself – and your skin – a favor and clean your brushes and sponges regularly.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes and Sponges?

To keep bacteria from growing in your makeup tools, dermatologists recommend you clean makeup brushes at least once a month and sponges at least once a week. Cleaning these items is actually really easy — and inexpensive — to do.

The only tools you need are fresh water, a bowl, and of course, soap. Here at Katherine Natural Cosmetics, we like to use cleaning products that are made without dyes or chemicals like parabens, sulfates or phthalates (just like all our cosmetics!).

There are several inexpensive cleaning products on the market these days. Some are made specifically made for cleaning beauty tools, like Beauty Blender’s liquid cleanser.

A bar of soap or a bit of baby shampoo will also work. And we also like Dr. Bonner’s organicsoaps which are made with vegetable oils instead of synthetic detergents or animal fat.

How To Clean Makeup Brushes

  • To clean makeup brushes, run the bristles under lukewarm water until the the bristles are damp and all residual makeup is washed off. Do not use hot water on your brushes. And be careful to keep handles dry.
  • Next, add a bit of soap to a small bowl of warm water. Loosen the remaining makeup and dirt from the brushes by gently swirling the bristles in the water or gently rubbing the bristles between your fingers.
  • Rinse the brushes under lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Again, be careful to keep  the brush handles dry.
  • To dry your brushes, first use a clean, lint-free towel to absorb any excess water. Then re-shape the bristles, as needed.
  • Next, set the brushes on a counter to finish air drying. For best results, lay the brushes flat and with the bristles hanging over the edge of a counter. Laying them directly on a towel or standing them upright to dry could cause them to mildew.
  • Do not use a blow dryer or a flat iron on your brushes.

  • To clean your makeup sponges, wet your sponge with warm water.
  • Add a quarter-sized drop of soap to the sponge and massage in to loosen makeup and dirt. Don’t rub too hard – the sponges can tear.
  • Next, rinse the sponge under warm water until the water runs clean.
  • Squeeze out the excess water and then let air dry.
  • Although some people clean their sponges by running them through in the washing machine, most makeup artists recommend against this technique.
