HOMETOWN: New York, NY
CURRENT LOCATION: Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Florida
SCHOOL: Laurel Springs Online School
For this up-and-coming equestrian, it was truly love at first ride. At just 18 months old, Elli climbed on top a pony at a local fair and that was it; she was hooked. “They put me on it and I wouldn’t get off,” she said. “They had to have it walk me to the car. And I was kicking and screaming when they tried to take me off.”
Elli started out riding at a stable near her home in Southern California not long afterwards. In those early days, Elli, who is now 15, said her dad would lead her on long trail rides (he would be on foot!). By 8, she was ready for the show ring. And she’s been bringing home the ribbons ever since. “I spend all my time at the barn,” she said. “I have never played another sport, have never done music. It’s always just been horses.”
It’s this passion that also brought Elli to the east coast. This past fall, she relocated from California to New York to further her riding career. She currently lives in Manhattan and trains with Stacia Madden at Beacon Hill Show Stables in New Jersey.
So what does a day in the life look like for this competitive athlete? It’s a lot of hard work! When she’s not showing, Elli, who is a high school freshman, said she kicks off her day with school. From 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. she attends online classes through the Laurel Springs School. It’s then off to the barn. Elli, who owns three horses, said starts riding at noon. By 3 p.m., she’s done and is back to school until 6 p.m.
Next up? Working out. That’s right! On top of riding for three hours a day, Elli said she also exercises daily with a focus on her abs and arms. She said she also tries to keep her diet healthy by eating lots of protein and vegetables. She does have a weakness for dessert, though. Her favorite? Talenti Peanut Fudge Sorbetto.
Elli said she heard of Katherine Natural Cosmetics from fellow equestrian friends who told her they loved being part of the positive #Katherinegirl community. She’s glad she decided to apply to be a #Katherinegirl Ambassador. “It’s a community of girls supporting girls,” Elli said. “And it’s also so much fun. My friends and I really love the makeup!”
She also values the commitment #Katherinegirls make to their communities. And it should come as no surprise that this equine-loving teen’s favorite way to give back involves horses. When Elli lived in Southern California, she said she liked to volunteer at the therapeutic riding center, Mustard Seed Ranch. This Orange County-based nonprofit helps abused and neglected children heal through equine-assisted therapy.
Elli, who is currently showing at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Florida, has big dreams for her future. She hopes to get the chance to compete at the Olympics one day (she’s aiming for 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles). Elli said she’s also planning to attend college and hopes to give modeling a try one day.
No matter what she does, Elli said she has one person to thank for the opportunities and successes she’s had: her dad. “My dad is my biggest role model,” she said. “He’s really a good person and I strive to be like him. He handles even the toughest situations with grace.”
Fun Facts: Elli used to love surfing. That is until she got a good look at what was under her surfboard. “My surf instruction put a GoPro camera under my surfboard and there was a shark under my board! I never did that again.”
Favorite #Katherinemoment: One of her favorite #Katherinemoments was winning the 2016 CPHA Equitation Foundation Championships on her horse, Alant. “I did it on my less experienced, younger horse,” she said. “It was a really a big step in our progress together. It was a great moment for me.”
Elli, who said she has sensitive skin that is prone to breaking out, loves how kind Katherine Natural Cosmetics non-toxic makeup products are on her skin. Here are some of her favorites.
K-Sport WOW Stick SPF 20: “It keeps the sun off my face and covers blemishes. It also stays on and doesn’t sweat it off.”
Concealer: “I don’t usually like concealers because they cake on. But this one goes on smoothly and it really works.”
K-Sport Lip Protection Gloss: “It goes on nicely but it’s not sticky and it doesn’t dry out my lips.”
